AROWANA has made the highest contributor to the country's ornamental fish export, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry deputy secretary-general (consumerism and management) Mahani Tan Abdullah.
She said the arowana export was expected to contribute RM250 million of RM1 billion export revenue this year.
Mahani said this was attributed to the growing demand from European countries, like the UK, Spain and Italy followed by the US, Taiwan and China, which were set to be its major importers.
Hence, the government is encouraging small- and medium-sized enterprises to develop the best arowana breeding method, she said when launching the Arowana Breeding Management Scheme developed by Arowana Venture Bhd here yesterday.
"Malaysia is fortunate to be one of the three countries in the world that could breed arowana in captivity. The others are Singapore and Indonesia," he said.
Arowana Venture chief executive officer Michael Liu said the scheme was aimed at raising funds to breed arowana and sell fish fry for domestic and international markets and plough back the profit for the growth of the business. Bernama
